Twelve stones for twelve tribes. The breastplate of the High Priest, the Choshen, is described in Exodus 28:15-17: “It is to be square, a span long and a span wide, and folded double. Then mount four rows of precious stones on it.”
Aaron wore it over his heart whenever he sought a decision from the Lord. According to tradition, if the stones glittered God was in favor, and if they grew dull it signified his disapproval.
