God instructed Aaron the High Priest to wear upon his chest a breastplate mounted with twelve different gems, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. In Hebrew it is called the Choshen. Tradition holds that the High Priest wore it when seeking God’s will, and that the glittering of the stones signified God’s favor.
