Large Copper Mortar and Pestle, a Biblical Kitchen Tool
Long before grinders and mills, there was the mortar and pestle. Scientists have found ancient examples in Southwest Asia dating back to around 35,000 BC, making it one of the oldest food preparation tools known.
The Bible knows it well. Proverbs 27:22 speaks of grinding “grain with mortar and pestle”, and in Herod’s Temple the incense was pounded in mortars made of gold.
Our large copper mortar and pestle has the weight and size for real work with spices, seeds and herbs. It also makes a handsome display piece for a kitchen, and a useful prop for teaching about food and worship in the time of the Bible.
