The Greek word for fish, “ichthys,” is an acronym for “Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter,” which translates into English as ‘Jesus Christ, Son of God, [Our] Savior’. It is believed that the fish was the first symbol identifying Christens before the cross. These image of two fish can be found in many mosaics in the Holy Land.
